RECYCLING

Check out our new Recycling Video!

The Public Services Department works with the Recycling and Hazardous Waste Disposal Committee of the Conservation Commission to provide residents with an effective recycling program. Recyclable materials are collected curbside once a week. All recycling can be commingled and then is sorted at the recycling plant (see this video of the how the plant sorts).  Commingled materials should be placed in a bag or container and then placed by the curb no later than 7:00 am. The Village does not collect recycling on Village observed holidays.  Make up collection occurs on the Wednesday of the week in which the holiday occurs.  The Village's 2009 Recycling Pickup Schedule details the items accepted as well as the pickup schedule.

There are two schedules, one for homes EAST OF HWY 5 and one for homes WEST OF HWY 5, so be sure to get the right schedule based on your home’s location.  Questions may be directed to the Village’s Public Services Office at 295-5021.

The Village also has a recycling center where residents can drop off their comingled recyclables in any of the containers on site. The recycling center is located at 600 McCaskill Road and is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm.

North Carolina law changed on October 1, 2009  making it illegal to deposit plastic bottles in the landfill.  Please read here for more information.

The Village has a wide list of Acceptable Materials, which generally include:

  • Paper (Newspaper, Magazines, Office Paper, etc.)
  • Aluminum and steel cans
  • Glass
  • Cardboard, and
  • Chipboard (cereal boxes, shoe boxes, etc.)
  • Rechargeable batteries can be dropped off at the Public Service office or Village Hall and they will be recycled

Items that fall outside of the Village's recycling program include:

  • Oil and car batteries - These can be recycled at the Hillcrest Recycling Center located on Hwy. 15-501 in Carthage or at most retail outlets that sell these items. Dry batteries (household batteries such as A, AA, C, etc.) can be discarded with regular household garbage.
  • Pesticides/Insecticides - There is not a recycling center in Moore County for these items currently. The Moore County Cooperative Extension holds a recycling day for these types of products. They can be reached at (910) 947-3188 for further information.
  • Paint cans - These are picked up with regular household trash if the paint in the can is completely dried. Paint left in liquid form will not be picked up. The dried paint and can must be placed in a separate bag. (Note: pouring cat litter into the paint can will dry the paint up)
  • Used tires - The Moore County Landfill located at 456 Turning Leaf Way off Hwy #5 will accept up to five (5) used tires at a time. They can be contacted at (910) 295-4202.
  • Toner/Ink cartridges - These are generally accepted for recycling at retail establishments that sell these products.

If you have any questions regarding other items that may be recycled or about the Village's recycling program in general, please contact the Pinehurst Public Services Department at (910) 295-5021.
