KEVIN BREWER EARNS PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION

Kevin Brewer on December 9, 2011 demonstrated professional competency by successfully completing the CERTIFIED ARBORIST examination administered through the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and the local Chapter of the ISA.

The purpose of the ISA Certification Program is to improve the level of knowledge and standard of practice within the tree care profession.  It is designed to assist the public in identifying those professionals in arboriculture who have demonstrated, through a professionally developed examination and education program, a thorough knowledge of tree care practices.  All Certified Arborists carry a wallet identification card for verification.  Certification is valid for three years.  The ISA program tests and certifies an individual's knowledge in the field of Arboriculture.

The International Society of Arboriculture is a scientific and educational organization devoted to the dissemination of information in the care and preservation of shade and ornamental trees.

ISA's Certification Program is designed to promote the professional development of those involved in the field of arboriculture or tree care.  When contracting for your tree care needs, contact individuals who are certified through this voluntary program.

UPCOMING PROJECTS

The Parks and Recreation Department has a number of projects funded in the 2010-11 fiscal year that will be starting soon to expand or upgrade facilities.  The Pinehurst Greenway system will see expansion in two areas starting this fall.  A new section of trail will be built connecting the trail in front of Pinehurst Elementary School to the downtown Village near the Given Memorial Library.  The other area to see expansion will start where the trail ends at Chicken Plant Road and continuing down Linden Road towards Pine Vista where future expansion will take the trails to the Pinehurst Marina.

Other projects include improvements to the sand parking lot at Cannon Park bordered by McIntyre and Woods Road and replacing fencing in the park.  The parking lot improvements will create two designated entrances/exits and organize the parking spaces with wheel stops and landscaped islands.  The fencing project will involve the installation of new backstops for the two ball fields, and removing the chain link fence bordering Field 1 to be replaced with a split rail fence.  We will try to minimize disruptions to activities going on in Cannon Park and appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to improve the safety and beauty of our park facilities.

WALKING SCHOOL BUS PROGRAM CONTINUES

Pinehurst Elementary School, in partnership with FirstHealth of the Carolinas and the Parks and Recreation Department, is encouraging students and their parents to participate weekly in the popular “Walking School Bus”.  This is a program created through a Fit Community Grant the partnership received in 2008 to promote healthy lifestyle changes and to combat the growing childhood obesity rates.

Staff and volunteers are ready to walk your children to school every Wednesday morning from 7:00 – 7:35 am during the school year.  Parents are asked to park in the sand parking lot at Cannon Park and use the new Greenway Trail along Craig and Dundee Roads.  We also ask that vehicular traffic keep an eye out for children walking to school on these days and please adhere to the posted speed limit of 25 mph at all times so that our children can be safely walked to school.  If you would like to volunteer on one of the planned walk to school days, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 295-2817.
