ENGINEERING

The Engineering Department oversees the design and construction of various Village infrastructure projects, including transportation, pedestrian, drainage, and water and sewer projects.In addition, the department reviews and approves both preliminary plans and construction drawings for development projects. Engineering staff also inspects development sites to ensure compliance with Village Infrastructure Standards. The department prepares the Village-wide Annual Street Resurfacing and Improvements program and also manages the Village’s street right of ways by overseeing the Encroachment Agreement program.  Engineering staff also oversees small/spot drainage improvements in accordance with the Village’s Drainage Policy and is responsible for floodplain management due to the Village’s participation in the National Flood Insurance Program.

Other responsibilities of the Engineering Department include preparing and updating:

• Intersection Level-of-Service studies to track the performance of various roadway intersections in the Village,

• Drainage studies to develop recommendations for larger-scale drainage improvement projects,

• Traffic studies to support the Police Department in maintaining safe travel around the Village, and

• The Village’s Hazard Mitigation Plan as required by FEMA.

On January 8, 2008, the Council heard a presentation from Mike Rutkowski of Kimley-Horn and Associates regarding the Western Connector Feasibility Study.  A discussion then followed.  This was the first step in the process, with  completion of this connector road taking about 15-20 years.
